Description: Human milk is the first food for human babies, and most parents feed directly at the breast or chest, but many parents may want or need to express milk in order to initiate or maintain their breastfeeding goals. After exploring the reasons we need or choose to pump, we will discuss how and when to do it, tools from hands and cups to pumps and flanges, how to handle the milk once we’ve expressed it, and ways to safely give baby expressed milk. Additionally, we’ll identify some social barriers like birth and hospital practices, pumping time in varied work settings, leave and benefits, differences in pump coverage by public and private health insurance plans, availability of qualified lactation specialists, ability to purchase feeding equipment, and response to emergencies.
